Guthrie Bowron: A Legacy of Excellence in Home Decorating

In 1896, the Guthrie Bowron brand had its humble beginnings when Henry Guthrie of Dunedin joined forces with George Bowron from Rangiora to sell various products across the South Island of New Zealand. However, it was in the mid-1920s that the company made a pivotal shift by importing essential ingredients for paint – lacquer, varnish, lead, and linseed oil, becoming the base for paint production at the time. In 1932, Guthrie Bowron was appointed as an agent for Dulux Paints, marking a significant milestone in the company’s history.

Over the years, Guthrie Bowron expanded, opening its first store in Christchurch and becoming a public company in 1963. By 1969, the brand boasted 18 stores across New Zealand. In 1971, the company was acquired by ICI (NZ) Ltd, the owner and manufacturer of the Dulux paint brand. This acquisition further fuelled the growth, resulting in 34 outlets by 1985.

In 1992, Guthrie Bowron underwent another transformation when it was sold to a team of senior managers who initiated the franchising of stores. In 2014, Alan Heatlie and Ed Connolly purchased the business from Waterman Capital and continued to invest and expand the company. This new era brought about several exciting achievements and signalled a commitment to continued growth for both franchisees and the franchisor.

Guthrie Bowron has remained a trusted name in New Zealand for decades, known for its rich history and commitment to excellence. With a wide range of decorating products, including paint, wallpaper, tools, curtains, blinds, and flooring, the brand offers customers a complete decorating solution.

A unique aspect of Guthrie Bowron is its service agreement with Dulux, allowing stores to sell paint to Dulux trade account holders, which complements the retail business and distinguishes the company as a one-stop decorating specialist. The brand’s focus on expert knowledge, quality products, and exceptional service creates a shopping experience that resonates with customers.

Guthrie Bowron’s target market is “mainstream New Zealand,” catering to both decorating enthusiasts and those seeking professional assistance. With an inclusive approach, the company engages a diverse audience, adapting its marketing strategies as needed. Their nation-wide marketing efforts are a testament to the brand’s commitment to staying at the forefront of consumer awareness.

However, what truly sets Guthrie Bowron apart is its dedication to understanding and serving its customers. The company conducts extensive annual customer research to meet their needs and expectations. The brand’s emphasis on providing expert advice and a range of solutions sets it apart, making it a go-to destination for homeowners seeking to enhance their living spaces.

Guthrie Bowron’s remarkable journey from its inception in the late 19th century to its current position as a leader in the New Zealand home decorating market exemplifies the brand’s enduring legacy of quality, innovation, and customer-centric focus. With a rich history and a commitment to excellence, Guthrie Bowron continues to be the go-to destination for all things related to home decorating in New Zealand and a sustainable and successful business model for Guthrie Bowron franchisees.
